about

This takes me back. It was 2001. The word “millennial” was not invented yet. TV didn’t have a pause button. And I was just a teenager trying to launch a musical career.

My first real solo effort in making electronic music was with this demo album, “Che Moves in Mysterious Ways”, using Che Guerrilla as stage name. I was not into communism but I thought it sounded really cool. I burned 10 copies onto CDs and sold them for 5 or 10 guilders each to friends. I also sent some copies to music labels, hoping to be discovered, but somehow that never worked out.

I got into electronic music from an early age. I remember, in a cliche 80s sort of way, playing a Synthesizer Greatest Hits cassette over and over until the tape almost derailed. As a side effect I had Moroder’s The Chase stuck in my head for a while. Typical influences were Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Moroder and Kraftwerk. I took keyboard lessons for a few years.

As I got older, computers became more influential. By the time I was 16 I was hammering away in Cakewalk, making MIDI tracks. I was not into it enough to setup my own studio, nor did I have enough money for equipment, so I used the family PC whenever it was available.

Together with a school friend I tried to work on it a bit more seriously, but ultimately I decided to go it alone. I discovered a tracker (a form of digital audio workstation) called Jeskola Buzz that allowed all kinds of digital instruments and samples and was relatively easy to learn.

At the time, I was inspired by Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, DJ Shadow, Fatboy Slim, Orbital. I think I wanted to get released through Ninja Tune, so I catered to that style. It involved a lot of sampling - from TV shows (that I had to record to VHS first), my parents’ vinyl collection, and some drum loops that I downloaded off the internet.

I did everything myself - sampling, mixing, mastering, copying to CD, designing and printing the CD cover - I even made a promotional website! You can check out the original CD booklet as a bonus item.

My studio was my bedroom at my parents’ house. By this time I had bought my own PC. In the bonus photos you can see the setup I used*.

Fast forward to 2020. I had some time on my hands the past month to reflect - on life, music, the universe - and remembered that I still had the CD lying around. So I copied it back into the digital realm** and… here we are!

So, it’s been 19 years since I made this record, and even though it was released to public many years ago I feel like this time it’s the real deal. A lot has happened in between: I more than doubled in age, I switched to Ableton as DAW, and my studio now has its own dedicated room. I still have a lot of unfinished tracks that I'm sure I will get round to sharing at some point.

I thoroughly hope you enjoy this record and are willing to look beyond the muddy basslines here and there. Be sure to check out the bonus images as well. Thanks for your support, keep yourself out of trouble and stay tuned!

* Notice the iomega zipdrive that I had to transfer the master tracks onto - my PC didn’t have a CD burner or internet so I had to transfer the mastered tracks to another computer that had that capability. The crappy PC speakers definitely helped in getting a “lo fi” feel :)

** I used to make backups from time to time but to get all the tracks onto Bandcamp I had to transfer the actual CD tracks onto my laptop using another iomega device. Funny how life works sometimes…
